Tree Skirt Question

Post by balsamsue » Wed Oct 22, 2008 8:08 am

Hi All,
I'm making a quilted tree skirt now.
I just need to run this by others BEFORE I cut.. sometimes I have trouble visualizing..
I've cut a 6" hole in the middle of it and a straight line from the edge to the middle hole for the trunk..
As I lay the batting and backing on to sew the outer edges together, it occurs to me that I should cut the same 6" hole and straight line in the backing and batting, correct? then as I sew around the outer edges, I will also sew right along up the straight line and around the 6" hole through all 3 layers. then I can do button holes and attach fabric ties to "tie" the skirt down the slit...

does this description make sense? Any input will be appreciated..
Thanks,
Sue

Some one else may have a better idea, but that sounds correct to me.

I want to hand quilt a quilt I made of Fireweed fabric I bought in Alaska. At my quilting class in Ca. the ladies said it would look good with a Fireweed pattern. Does anyone know where I could buy such a pattern or does anyone know where I could get a good picture to copy. Thank you,

Sue, you can do this the sneaky way, too, and it might be easier: lay your top out on the batting and backing, smooth and pin as needed, stitch around the edges using the edges of the top as a guide, THEN trim the backing and batting, leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance. You won't have to match up pieces that way.

Not sure if you blog but Amanda Jean has a marvelous tutorial that she just posted! www.crazymomquilts.blogspot.com

I've been sewing along with her for about 10 weeks making the projects she's been posting, mostly gifts for Christmas.

My first tree skirt was made from a .10 yard sale Christmas round table cloth. I cut it open up to the middle, put it around the tree and pinned it with a diaper pin. LOL. Believe it or not I used it for over 15 years! When I started quilting I made a 'real' tree skirt.

I make tree skirts and this is how I do it. Take a 44 inch square and flold it in 4's. Take a measure tape and draw a quarter circle from top point to bottom about 21 inches. The same at top at 3 inches. Cut on lines. I sometimes sew the front and back together and stuff batting inside. The best way is to use Eleanor's quick turn method.

Hi Again,
Thanks for everyone who had suggestions..
I did make it using Eleanor's quick turn method. It came out great. I used Christmas fabrics I bought at yard sales and the backing was a round Christmas tablecloth that was the right size! I'll try to take a picture and post it for you. I think my daughter and family will love it.
Thanks again for your input.
