I have been slowly collecting a bunch of DVDs.. they are good for those days I want to sack out and not do anything special. Mostly when DH is out of town and I have control of the remote.
I have watched EB Pioneer Quilts from "94 and Almanac Quilt from 90. I am thinking of those because I just participated in a BOM club that featured a large number of these blocks. I was really impressed with her technique for FLYING GEESE. I had her Flying Geese Book and no where does it mention how to figure out the different sizes of the blocks and fabric square used to make the blocks.
In the DVD she gave the formula for figuring out the fabric sizes. I am sharing it here. If you know of where it is written out please let me know as I wanted to see the formula in writing. I have been playing with the block and so far it has worked every time.
Formula for FLYING GEESE .... FABRIC SIZES ...
Example:
3 INCH x 6 inch of a finished block.
YOU need to know the length of the block
for the large (sky)fabric cut add 2-1/2 inch (6 + 2 1/2 inch = 8 1/2 inch )
for the small (geese) fabric cut add 1-1/4 inch (6 + 1 1/4 = 7 1/4 inch)
I have tried adding the 2-1/2 inch to the sky fabric of other size blocks. I then added 1-1/4 inch to the geese fabric... it works successfully with each attempt. I like the new square up ruler too but now feel confident I can figure out the block size without using the rulers.
