Could anyone tell me what the serpentine stitch is and how to do it?
Thanks!

How to "do it" depends on your sewing machine, whether you just push a button for the stitch or have a different method of accessing it. Check your machine manual for using decorative stitches as each machine is different. I have two machines and each one had completely different directions for using it.

I practiced different stitch widths and lengths and came up with a nice stitch that I ended up using for part of my machine quilting through the middle of some narrow sashings. It was quick, easy and well liked at the LQS where the quilt is on display.

I'm also seeing it used instead of stitch in the ditch stitching, a nice, playful stitch and a lot easier than trying to keep your needle in the ditch. Have fun with it whatever you do.

Even if your sewing machine does not have the SERPENTINE STITCH..... if it does zig-zag there will be some type of utility stitch in the machines memory that you can use that will look nice. The important part of the stitch is that it goes across both parts of the ditch.

Test out all of your machine capabilities and see what you like. I love quilting on children's quilts using my decorative stitches. I figure I have an expensive machine it is up to me to get good use out of it.

I am trying to get the nerve up to do the same on a quilt I will put into a show.... I think I am almost there.

Have fun quilting....
