What is the spring for on my foot?

My Baby Lock Crafter's Choice sewing machine has something on it's regular general/all purpose foot that I don't know what is, and can't seem to find anything regarding it in my book. It is a little black screw on a spring thingy that sits near the back of my foot. The screw is on the left side of the foot. Does anyone know what this is for? Thanks so much.

I'd like to see what people say on this. I have Janome machines and like your general foot mine has the same.

LOL, I have a Viking machine, so I have no idea, but can't resist guessing anyway :-)

Could it possibly be a place to fasten this thing (I have no clue what it is called in English, nor in Swedish for that matter, LOL)? It is used when you want to quilt parallel lines without marking them on the quilt top and if they are too far apart to use the edge of the foot for a measurement?

On my machine, there is a small slot at the back of the foot for fastening this bar thing, and I've used it once when I wanted to quilt lines that were 1 1/2" apart. It worked very well.

Hi Homespunmary,

No, the little hole you speak of is indeed what holds this quilting gauge on your walking foot.

Here's a picture of what I'm asking about:

On the left side, towards the back of the presser foot is a black screw on a spring. That's what I'm wondering about. What is it? What does it do? Thanks.

I have one on my kenmore regular foot and have used it a few times. It helps to lift your foot over heavy material if you come across a thick spot on your material while sewing. I dont' know if yours is the same thing or not.

Hi Brenda,

Just exactly how does that work? I'm curious. Thanks!

Okay, I have had Janome machines for about 6-7 years now and they all have it. I did not have a clue what it was until sometime last year. Someone on the Janome discussion list mentioned it. I still haven't used it. They said that if you press the black button, it sort of locks the foot in position to go over large, bulky seams, such as jeans. After someone tries it, let us know if it works.

I have a Janome MC6600P and on my foot "A" there is that little black button with the little spring. Mine is on the right hand side. I'm going to call my dealer tomorrow and ask what it's for. I'll let y'all know.
