how to machine quilt a 16 ft. long quilt. in smaller sections?

Post by pol » Tue Aug 12, 2008 2:08 pm

I want to machine quilt my looooong 16 ft. X 3ft patchwork textile. I can't imagine how i'de get all that bulk under the arm of my home machine! With the way the design of the quilt top works I can split it into three smaller pieces, two 4 X 3ft. sections on both ends and an 8 X 3ft section in the middle. If I machine quilt these three pieces separately with batting and backing how would it be best to join them in the end into one long quilt for the wall? What method will make the smoothest, most inconspicuous seams between the quilt "sandwiches"?

Well, I have to say that I don't know what to say. I can't quite seem to get past the 16' quilt! LOL I would suggest sending it to a long arm quilter and let them put it on their frame. I can't imagine doing it on your sewing machine. BTW what is a patchwork textile?

Hi everyone - I would love to SEE a video on machine quilting very large pieces in sections. I'll try a search on Youtube, rosebud. Thanks for pointing my brain in that direction! My textile is made of hand-dyed cottons (called shibori) pieced in large squares and long strips. Hence my term "patchwork textile". But you could call it an art quilt (once i get it quilted!), a wall hanging, textile art, surface design experiment.....etc., etc. It will hang on the wall in a two-story stairwell connecting kitchen to basement. Shibori patterns on fabric can look like flowing water and this piece does look like a long, purple blue river. As a bed quilt, 3ft. wide and 16ft. long it would be a bit tricky to sleep under. But then again, I could wrap and wind up in it and stay quite warm. Sleeping in a blue river might give me good dreams.....sweet dreams and creative days to you all.

I couldn't get the link to appear for you so here are instructions for going to the site I was telling you about.

go to http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/episode_archive

scroll to Site Features, click on crafts, click on quilting and needlework, click on watch simply quilts. on the left side of the screen type the word divided in the box for video search and click search videos. This will bring up the list of videos for divided quilting. Just view the 4 videos on divided quilting to see if this technique will work for you.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I hope this helps.

Mary

I seen something on Simply quilts..called divided quilting...you spray baste all three together..backing , batting and the top...then pull back your top a little ways and cut it, but not in a straight line..like small curves....them roll up the top and backing and ...its way less bulkey..and then quilt the part you want to...then stitch a feather stitch and sew the batting back on the,. quilt that part and quilt it....the spray baste holds it pretty well...you use your pins to.........Hope I made since?...lol
