I would like to start some machine quilting what size stich do you use when doing this anyone have any answers and by the way it would be for free motion .

you don't need to set a stitch length on your machine.

The size of your stitch will depend on how fast you move the quilt under the needle and how fast your machine is running. It's not hard but it is a skill that takes lots of practice.
The main thing is using the right size needle for the thread you are using. If your thread breaks, frays, or bunches up, use a different size needle or change thread size. The thinner the thread the better it will melt into the fabric and not show every boo boo. I use 70 wt 100% poly thread for the bobbin no matter what I use for the top stitch.

sew bug why do you use poly thread on bobbin i have never done this and never had a problem using cotton i usely use the same as top thread im using of course im not to experienced at quilting so you must know something that i have missed ollie

I use the thinnest thread I can find in the bobbin and it's hard to find very thin cotton, it's not strong enough at that wt. It's just a matter of preference. I don't like a heavy looking machine stitch, I like it almost unnoticable. There are many good threads to try so try them all. The main thing is to have the correct needle size for the thread.
