Thread and ravels

Post by TheKid » Mon Feb 25, 2008 10:09 am

I keep my threads cut as I go. But, when I am finished I find so many materials have ravels. How do you cope with them? I am looking at ravels that seem to be just coming from the movement of the materials as I sew. an answer would be helpful. Or, am I wishing for too much? Lost in the ravel pile. LOL
Thanks for the hints. I have a lint roller in the dressing room, but I think I will get it and bring it in to the sewing room. Duh!
Why didn't I think of that? Many heads are better than one.

I have threads everywhere when I sew. I keep one of the cone hand vacs in the sewing room, it looks pretty and it works great. I stop and vac every few hours.

I keep a lint roller handy. Those ravels drive me crazy too.

i have them every where all over me - even when i leave the house i have the threads on me - i clip as i go that usually helps - chain piecing can cut down on them - the less i handle the fabric the less ravels i get - you will always have some

I certainly understand what you are talking about. I keep my threads cut also, when finished with the quilt top, lots and lots of ravels. You probably won't like my idea of how to take care of them, but after getting the top done, I press it, turn it over and snip all of the ravels. When I am done, the back looks almost as good as the front, lol. Does anyone else do that, or am I in my box alone? lol.

I try to keep my threads cut as much as possible, and of course I have the mess to go along with them...I keep 1/2 of a Swiffer or Grab It dry cloth on my sewing table and sewing area and I would be lost without one! They are great to wipe down your sewing area -- they pick up all of dust, lint, pet hairs and stragly threads, etc. Great for wiping down the cutting mat, picks up all of those fabric shavings and threads.

I also have a bunch of "Thread Catchers" -- one at each sewing machine, one for the iron board and since I use 6 ft tables for sewing and cutting, both ends of a table will have one. I'm really bad about just dropping or "flicking" threads when I cut them...so these little "thread catchers" really come in handy for me.

Along with the lint rollers, I also keep a roll of masking tape near my sewing area. Since I have numerous horses, dogs and cats, pet hairs are in abundance around here and I must confess, I do get a little anal about them. The masking tape I use if I notice a hair or lint while I'm sewing. If I can snag them before I stitch over them, I'm much happier.

Happy Trails, jacquie

You can cut extra batting from your projects into manageable pieces and have those to catch the ravels and extra threads you cut off. I like to use them for wiping my sewing table when finished for the day, under the sewing table, around it, etc. Our dogs shed badly and though they do not come into the sewing room often, pet hair travels easily. LOL We have the Lint Rollers all around the house & in vehicles too.LOL
