Need help!

Post by Rose92 » Sun Feb 24, 2008 10:13 am

I am making the Double Wedding Ring, the QIAD way, by appliqueing the arcs onto the block. Now that I am sewing the blocks together, the meeting points of the arcs are not lining up perfectly. When I squared the blocks to 12" I tried to have 1/4" seam allowance at all points but it was hard to do. Any suggestions?

I wish I could help you but I haven't tried it yet. I am sure someone here knows. I will also see the suggestion so that I can use it when I get to do this quilt.

Check the Egg Money Swap BOM. I think it is Evie that posted all about this block.

Oh Rose ... you are scaring me I have completed several of the arcs and have also cut out ALL the pieces to the quilt ... I just haven't ironed any of the arcs onto my background fabric.

I'm going to be watching this topic like a hawk! :(

Judy:

I am sewing the blocks together and now that I have done it, I understand more what should be done to make sure each block is the same and everything lines up.

If you haven't sewn the arcs yet, I would mark the corner triangles on the 12 1/2" block, then draw--not cut yet--on the block the 12" edges. Then I would place the arcs, according to the instructions, matching the center lines of the block, arcs and the triangle in the corner. Then I would remeasure with the 12" ruler, making sure there is 1/4" from the outer edge of the end of each arc to the 12" mark you made earlier. That way each arc would be the proper distance from the edge. That seems to be where I am having the problem, the arcs are not uniformly 1/4" from the edge of the block. My rings are not matching perfectly (which is really distressing me) but I am too far into this to start over. I am hoping the quilting and overall effects covers up the defects. Best of luck to you!

Oh my gosh, what have I gotten myself into? I thought for sure since I'm simply stitching on the marked lines that nothing could go wrong. But to be on the safe side, I have printed out your explanation and have put it with my quilt pieces.

Now I have a confession, Linda ... I was soooooo excited when my fusible arcs and directions arrived that I couldn't wait to cut them all out and stack them up ... I always like to get a quilt "kitted up" so it's ready to start whenever. Well, I barged into it and then realized (after a great deal of cutting) that I was cutting through TWO LAYERS of the applique sheets. I ruined several arcs so I'll probably have to order more.

Let this be a lesson to anyone using printed fusible sheets for the first time ... they are VERY VERY THIN and you need to check and make sure you're cutting through only one layer.

The only help that I can give is for you to watch the video:

I made the double wedding ring for the Egg Money Quilt BOM, but not for a whole quilt made up of double wedding rings. Wish I could be more help. The above video is Eleanor demonstrating how, maybe there will be something useful for putting the blocks together.
