thought I'd post an update to my "practicing". Here is a table runner that I made from the April Lotto Block that I made and liked so much that I made three more. I stippled the side triangles after practicing quite a bit on scraps. Yes, there are still boo-boos, but they are livable as I am making progress!

It still needs binding and then it will be finished!

Itchn or Jan, My first tries were alot like yours. I did have to fix my machine that I bought used. It had some problems with the tension. I found I liked a doodle like yours above when I made hearts of all sizes and shapes with the lines. Sue Nickels says it takes 100 hours of practice til you get confident. She uses the fingers cut off of a rubber glove to put on her two fingers, the index and middle of each hand to get a good grip on the fabric. Have fun. Jan

Itchn or Jan My first samples looked like yours. It was also because the tensions on my machine a Babylock Esante, were off. I did a stipple like yours on the table runner with hearts instead of circles. I only have about 4 hours in on this venture into free motion sewing on quilts. Sue Nickels an award winning quilter says it takes 100 hours til you feel confident. She uses the fingers cut off of rubber gloves to put on her index and middle fingers to grip the quilt better. Have fun! Jan

Before I took on any serious project, I made some scrap squares, and really practiced on them. I also made hot pads with the stipuling. Then, when I felt like I had improved, I finally went to something more serious. I have slowly improved, but it really does take alot of practice, patience, and no interruptions. I have now learned to quilt in sections, stipule what I want on these sections, and then sew the full quilt back together. I have made several king size quilts this way.Never give up, just keep practicing and you will improve.

For me, I stipple almost everything and I find I can hide a lot of errors using "invisible thread"

When stippling, does it matter what size your stitching length needs to be? When I sew, I use 2.5. Can I leave it at that or do I need to change it? Also, can the stippling be any size? Example - stitches close together, far apart, somewhere in the middle? I haven't does this before but am about to attempt it. I am going to practice on alot of scrap first, but wanted to know what my limitations were.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First off, Welcome. I have not seen you post before. There are other topics on this and you can search the site to find them. Just go to the search button on the top and put in free motion or stippling, but make sure you look at the topics first because the replies will be lots to look through. Most of my quilts are free motion quilted or stippled and I love it. It does take practice and patience so don't give up. The machine does not control the stitch length so it doesn't matter what it is. The stitch length is determined on the speed of the machine & the movement of the hands. You really don't want real long or real short stitches, but you do want them unifor. Some machine/people will put their stitch length to zero then their feed dogs don't move. Some people leave their feed dogs up, some put them down. Some feel the feed dogs either drag their material or help them control it. You also use a 'darning' foot instead of a regular sewing foot. This foot does not sit on the material, but hops up and down.

Good luck and happy quilting,
Sharon V.
