I too have now put my QIAD flying geese ruler to use! Have made 192 geese (1 1/2" x 3") since yesterday, and have squares for another 96 marked and pinned for tomorrow morning!
I must say the ruler is absolutely great, but since I've never made flying geese any other way I can't help but wonder if the "regular" method of sewing triangles together wouldn't be quicker? All the squaring up you need to do with the QIAD method takes quite a lot of time... Those of you who have made geese both ways, do you find the QIAD way more time consuming (but do it for the accuracy)?

Off the top of my head I can think of 4 different ways to make flying geese, but I've only tried two. Squares & rectangles and QID. Given a choice, I do the QID way. I feel like I'm 'wasting' those little triangles that result from the squares & rectangle way, but more imporantly, my QID geese are much more acurate.

Necessity being the mother of invention, I found another way to make Flying Geese. Called the "No Waste Method for Making Flying Geese Units", the directions can be found at Patchpieces.com.
I was working on a project earlier today with limited fabrics, not even enough to use El's rulers, so the above method worked well.

I love the QIAD Flying Geese rulers! Made a table center with 64 geese and each one was poifect! I was so pleased I darn near teared up!

Anyway, well, I was both pleased and disappointed with the results. The flying geese units didn't turn out nearly as perfect as they do with El's rulers, but on the other hand, the points were perfect. I'm thinking this was probably 'operator error' and haste makes waste, as the spots I had trouble with were the side pieces. Often the tops of my geese were cock-eyed. But then, I've had that problem with the traditional method of making them, too. Must just be me. Hey, it's worth a try if you're interested. Again, sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Here's one for you all. I am making a Queen size quilt for my daughters graduation. It will have 13 pictures. My biggest challenge is that the picture is oval shape and will sit in the middle of a star. I don't know which geese ruler to use because each finished square should be 12 x 12. I just had the experience of using the 2 x 4 geese ruler. Which ruler do I use to make a star 12 x 12.

When I make a 12" star, I use the 3 X 6 ruler and make the geese that size. The center square then is 6" finished or 6 1/2" unfinished.
Or did you mean that the center is 12" square? If you did, there are no rulers that size. You would have to do it the old fashioned way of using a 6 1/2" by 12 1/2" rectangle and cutting 6 1/2" squares and drawing the diagonal line on them. Place the squares on the rectangles and sew on the line and trim off the excess fabric. I don't think I've seen stars this big. If you need better instructions, I can find them for you.
