Re: String quilt
String quilts, scrap quilts, strip quilts are my favorites. They are fun to make and oh so colorful. It's what I do most of the time and every time I take one to show and tell everyone loves it. You can really get creative with your placement of color or just pick randomly and it's still very attractivev. Go for it Iowa Girl, you'll love it. When I first started quilting there were no quilt stores and besides I couldn't afford to buy fabric just for quilts so I used scraps and was very happy with the results. I have made fancy quilts for which I bought coordinated fabric, but the colorful scrap or string quilts make me smile. Maybe it's because a child of the depression had to learn to be frugal. Whatever, I still love my scraps and strings.

Re: String quilt
Kay, my Aunt taught me how to make a "frugal" strip quilt when I was 16. She helped me make 3 for my "hopeless" chest! She took an old sheet and cut it into squares, then we took the good parts of old clothes and did strip piecing on the sheet blocks. Flipped them over and trimmed. We went to the Salvation Army and bought wool blankets to use as batting. The only thing new was the thread and the backing which we bought at a $1 a yard. My youngest son has one of them and he loves it even though it is practically a rag. He won't let me get rid of it even though I made him a brand new rail fence quilt for his birthday!

Re: String quilt
I have been cutting strips for a quilt lately. Trying to clean up my stash, and use up some of the small pieces. I saw a beautiful table runner made with strip squares set on point, with a black background. My LQS was selling gallon bags of strips for $2 to make table runners! Of course I had to get a couple, even though I have lots of scraps at home.....
