How to draw an Octagon

I have been doing drafting work for years and teaching drafting for several years more. So I could not help but take that approach. Thanks to Caroline for the idea.












First draw a circle with a compass for the desired size, then make verital lines tangent to both sides, then draw tangent horizontal lines on top and bottom, then use a 45 degree triangle to draw the four tangent slanted lines. It is perfect and all sides are equal.
To make an octagon you use a 45 degree triangle.
And just in case anyone wants to know how to make a hexagon you use a 30/60/90 degree triangle that is shown in one of the pictures on the right.
