For hand quilting I use a John James "betweens" needle size 10. Works best for me. Also I do it in a 14 inch hoop. Marge

i am trying to learn to hand quilt, i am at the part where i just drew designs on a piece of fabric the size of a pillow case. i started with feathers on the outer edge and then drew lines across the inside about 1 inch apart, then decided that since it was just a practice piece i drew lines between each of those for a 1/2 inch fill in. the streight lines got easier as i went, but my first 5 inches of the curves for the feathers (about the size of my thumb nail) look pretty nasty. i didn't remove anything since i want to see the improvement as i practice. it is sure relaxing.

I found it's easier to learn to hand quilt using "cheater cloth" or anything that is not pieced. It's easier than quilting over seam allowances at the beginning. Something like a small whole quilt sampler is fun or a printed panel. Good luck!!! Hand quilting is relaxing, and except for m&ms, you aren't tempted to eat while doing it. LOL!!!

darn i didn't even think of cheaters cloth. i got enough to make a quilt top plus the borders, that would be just the thing to practice on.
Thanks for the suggestion.

All you hand quilters are to be commended. This is an age old art that is dying. There is a lot to be said about a quilt that has been done by me from start to finish. I love the look of fancy machine quilting but also admire a basic grid design of a hand quilted quilt. And besides hand quilting is the quintessential form of relaxation for me. It takes a lot of patience to master this fine art. As they say...practice makes perfect. But it is so rewarding in the end. I'm glad to see hand quilting on the rize again. Every one has their own personal preference and it's good to see it all being promoted in this wonderful forum. You ladies all blend together to make this place special. I'm so glad I picked a soft spot to land. jan

A baby cheater panel is what I did as my first handquilted project to practice on. It worked great! I felt like I was a kid finally going to Big School when I finished and actually started on a real pieced quilt. Those seams did seem awfully hard at first.LOL But you learn and by the time I finished that quilt....I was hooked. LOL 1997
