Amie-
Did you buy that special plastic square batting ruler, or did you have your own measurements? That Fun and Done looks like fun for a small quilt. I have the cotton Theory book, but every time I look at it, it makes me tired, thinking of cutting all those tiny pieces of batting.

No, I didn't need it. I just cut my blocks 10", batt 10", and backing 12", used a 1" seam allowance. Amie

Just found this, seems fairly simple explanation...

Re: Quilt As You Go Technique
Looking at the assembly of the quilted blocks, it looks like you could apply this technique to a variety of quilted blocks. I think I am going to try this method, but modify it a bit. I don't have a frame or a machine with a large enough area to justify getting a frame. I've found it cumbersome to machine quilt large quilts. This may allow me to make more intricate quilting patterns in a larger size quilt.

That's what I was thinking. By quilting one square at a time I could do mucn more ornate top stitching without trying to maneuver something huge and bulky on my sewing machine.
Maybe it's just me, but I feel funny having someone with a longarm do all the actual uilting on my quilts. It takes away the satisfaction of knowing I made it. Free motion would be a no-brainer doing it one block at a time. You could even stipple in small areas that you couldn't reach otherwise. This has really got me thinking!

JudyWoo - I've made a couple of raggedy quilts using the same concept - quilt the squares before you sew them all together. I did this before I got my quilting machine because it was so much easier then trying to quilt a large quilt with my sewing machine.

I'm making a note to myself that this is a MUST DO on a future project.
My current WIP's are too far along to use this method, but I'm already thinking ahead and planning a quilt specifically for this and I'm really eager to try it!

I'm thinking that alot of patterns I want to do I can adapt to this method. I get frustrated trying to do anything more than SID or basic straight line echoing on a quilt larger than a wall hanging.
My list is also mounting...

Re: Quilt As You Go Technique
I decided to try and quilt one of my many BOM's with the fun and done method. So I modified the pattern for my needs
I have 12 1/2 inch blocks made my batting about 14 1/2 inches and trimmed down to 3/4 inch on each side after quilting and my backing I cut it to 17 1/2 inch square - this is the results so far
I do like it so far, but only have done 1 row done
The 3 blocks together

What it looks like before sewing

Very nice. Was it easier to quilt?
