I am not even trying to work in different directions yet but the rocking motion is sometimes working and other times not.

Are you using a hoop? that is what I use and not too big of one or it hits the arm of the chair. also make sure your material isn't too tight in the hoop.. I take my hand and press down the center to loosen it up some If it is too tight you can not rock the needle.

I have trouble rocking the needle also - so I do mine by one stitch at a time. You can get in a rythmn and it goes fast.

Oh yes I use a hoop. I started out using a floor one but it would just fall over when I was using it. I guess the legs are just not thick enough to hold a quilt so I bought one of those pvc lap ones and it is working better.

Way to go Brenda! At first I felt like I was all thumbs. The worst part was the thimble but after just jabbing my finger a few times and bleeding like heck I knew I had to conquer using a thimble! Keep at it. There WILL come a time when you think..."oh, how relaxing this is!."

I have tried so many thimbles because you are right, it is hard to get used to working with them. I finally one that is the most comfortable but I can't remember where I bought it so I can get some more. Isn't that always the way. It really is relaxing though.

I should have told you this before but just thought of it....
I had my husband hit my thimble with a hammer lightly to make it more oval shaped like my finger is. It is much more comfortable now!

I'm guessing you weren't wearing the thimble at the time.
