8 point star

Boy do I need help. I am making the 8 point star quilt using 45 degree to make the star. My big problem is when I go to sew the triangles and squares onto the star,I can't get the points to match up. I marked the 1/4 in on the star and marked the 1/4 in on the triangles. I basted the right sides together but when I get to the point it doesn't line up. I have tried 4 times and I need help.

Sometimes when I have made this star - I have found that the fabric stretches on me and I need to go back and re-square up the diamonds before putting them together. Also - be sure not to sew all the way to the end of the fabric - just to the end of the quarter inch seam -

I have also made a template out of a piece of pellon on that is exactly the size that my diamonds are suppose to be - and use that to check them as well - they could be too big or too small - any way off will give you the problem. I use the template to check after they are sewn.

Hope you find out the answers - it is a fun block to use in a quilt - after you get the hang of it!
