How do you make a border stencil come out evenly?

Post by ladyquilter5589 » Tue Oct 06, 2009 2:34 am

I am ready to put the stencil on my borders. Does anyone have suggestions how to make it come out evenly? Thank you, Sue

I can share with you how I do mine if it helps. Be careful about measuring the borders, top to bottom and side to side. I try to work out how I want the design to be in the corners, then work toward the centers. I copy the stencil on a piece of freezer paper and then if it needs to be adjusted to fit, the freezer paper can be adjusted and leave your stencil in tact. You can shorten or lengthen your pattern to fit, but try to make sure that your corners meet the sides well.
I hope I have'nt confused you. Pam

I think Pam said it well. At least that's how I do it. Make sure the corners fit will, then work toward the center of the border and slightly adjust your pattern to make it fit. You might have to shorten or lengthen feathers, or leaves or whatever you are stitching, but cleverly done, it won't show! Good luck!

I do it like Pam does if I am using a pattern like feathers or leaves on a wide, one fabric border. However, I very seldom use that kind of pattern. I most often make a 2 or 3 fabric border and then stitch in the ditch along each fabric or put a pattern or grid on the middle fabric.

It won't always come out even...sometimes you have to "cheat" and leave a little space or take in a little space here and there to make it come out even at the corners....just do some adjusting. Kind of like adding prairie points to the edges of a quilt....they won't always come out even unless you do some adjusting.
