Need a little help

Post by institcheswithrosie » Tue Aug 04, 2009 5:06 pm

I have a couple of fleece panels that I want to use as hangings (wolves for DH, UK Wildcats for me) What do I use as binding?

I have never used binding on fleece. I bought a beautiful panel several years ago. All I did with it was to hem it. It does shift so be careful.

Even when I use it to back a quilt, I leave enough to pull it around to the front of the quilt and tuck it in and hem it.

A long time ago, someone taught me the neatest trick for doing the corners with heavy fabric. It really does need a visual, so I will try to find a tutorial on line.

This one will work, but not the one I'm thinking of: (you need to scroll all the way to the bottom of photos)

I have looked but cannot find a tutorial on how I do the corners. I will try to explain. Decide on how wide you want the hem to be. Let's say 1". Then you want to cut the backing with 2" extra. Before you start to pin the hem down, put the corner down on a cutting mat, nice and flat. Take a ruler and line it up catty corner on the corner making sure the edge of the ruler is 1/4" above the corner point of the quilt top. Then cut the corner off. The cut off piece should be a triangle (you won't need that piece).

Okay, now that you have a corner wedge cut off, find the center of that cut edge, now fold the backing fabric, right sides together, and machine stitch (1/4" seam) starting at that center point, and stitch for 1". Now turn the corner out. You might need something like a bobkin to poke in there to make a nice neat corner. Now the corner is made without all the bulk. Just tuck in the rest of the hem and sew it down. Your machine will love you for it.

I suggest practicing first. Use the same method for just hemming one thickness of fleece. Just figure out where the corner of the finished piece will be and mark it, then following the cutting and sewing instructions above.
