I'm making this quilt for my hubby and want to put his name on it and a small saying but, don't know what to use or how to do it.

For my labels, I use aida cloth from my cross-stitching. I generally make very simple letters but there are some fancy scripts in cross-stitch books and probably on line, too. I often will then stitch a small picture or simple icon like couple trees and maybe a few swishes of blue for water. Or some daisies, a heart, a blazing sun, a smiling cat face >^o^< or whatever is very simple and means something to the statement the quilt is making. When it's all stitched, I sew on narrow borders of a matching or coordinating fabric. Then I hand stitch the label onto the quilt. You could also use a fusible interfacing in addition to the hand stitching. Kind of depends on how large your label turns out to be.

There are also books of labels available as well as preprinted labels to buy and fill in and color as you wish. My preference is to make my own. Hope this gives you some ideas! maryz

My fav. fabric shop has labels that come printed on panels. You use this iron on paper type stuff (sorry I am really new at all of this) iron it to the label, write what you want, peel the label off and iron it on to the back of the quilt. If you want I can send you one of the labels and a piece of the iron on fuseable paper with instructions. The ones I have are blue, and tanish and have a bear on them.

Are you talking about a little label that you will sew to the back of the quilt??? If so this is how I do it. I just take a rectangle piece of muslin, hem the edges nice. Then I iron a piece of freezer paper to the wrong side of the label. Write what I want on the front of the label with a pigma pen (the freezer paper just makes it more stable and easier to write on, heat set it with a dry iron, remove the freezer paper from the back and then hand sew the label to the back of the quilt.
Easy Peezy as my grandkids would say.
Hope this helps.

I use my computer printer. I iron muslin (or other light material) on freezer paper - 8.5" x 11". The trick is to set your printer for heavy paper. You can find these adjustments under "properties" on your printer. Using Microsoft Word, Open Office, or any other word processing program, I type what I want, print it out, and then sew some pretty fabric around all four corners, turn under the edges, and sew it onto the back of the quilt. The ink will not come off of the label and it looks so nice and neat too.

Remember to set your printer to heavy paper and you'll be so pleased with the results!

Nancy, does it make a difference if the printer is a laserjet or an inkjet? Seems like one of the inks is water soluble. Do you heat set the printing with an iron?

Sharon, I have a Dell Photo Printer, model 926, and I think it's an inkjet because it was inexpensive and I thought the expensive printers are the laser ones, but I really don't know for sure. I tried to look it up online right now, and I still can't figure it out!

When I re-read my earlier post, I need to clarify - I print from muslin that's been ironed on to 8-1/2 x 11" freezer paper, but I cut it down to size after I finished printing. And I think it looks pretty to sew some matching fabric from the quilt around the outside to frame it.

Oh, and yes, I did heat-set the label with my iron and the ink is there for good. I had tried unsuccessfully to print out labels before on my printer, but it didn't work until I read somewhere online about adjusting the paper thickness to heavy, and now it works like a dream! Good luck to you!

I have trouble with my muslin jamming up in my printer. So lately, I have printed out my label on printer paper. I then use a pigma pen and my light box and trace the label. I do iron the label fabric onto freezer paper so that it is easier to write on.
I came across some freezer paper sheets that are suppose to be heavier than regular freezer paper to use because others were having the muslin jam up in their printers also. I haven't tried it yet.
