Help!! Big loops on the bottom!

Post by purrfect-lady » Fri May 29, 2009 9:18 am

I've got problems! I have a Nolting Fun Quilter, but given that most of the machines have the same basic problems and solutions, perhaps someone has an idea even if you have a different brand of machine. I put a new quilt on my frame and started to stitch. I've got big loopy stitching on the bottom! Generally this would lead me to believe it's a tension issue. But I've adjusted the tension as far as it will go in either direction and I've also adjusted the bobbin tension twice. I've rethreaded and RE-rethreaded the machine and the bobbin. I've changed the needle - twice. It's only 7 months old. I've made about 5 quilts with it so far, finishing the last one about 5 weeks ago. No problems. Fabric, thread, batting are all the same. I made no changes in the settings before I started sewing on this project. I would think some of these things would have made SOME changes in the stitching if not fixed it, but it hasn't. I've got a distress call in to Nolting, but until they get back to me, does anyone here have any ideas that I haven't addressed yet? I know it's probably something silly that I've just neglected. It usually is! Thanks for any ideas! maryz

1/2 HOUR LATER

Well, I'm going to answer my own question here. I just talked to the tech at Nolting and he's a patient, patient man. The problem was the bobbin tension. Even though I had it adjusted to the specs in the manual, it still needed to be looser. Solved the problem immediately. So, while no one had time to send me your ideas, I know you would have and thank you all for that! I love having quilting friends like you all! mary

I'm glad it was such an easy fix. Since you had not had the problem before, I was a little worried. I was going to ask if it was the exact same thread. Glad you're ready to go again.

It wasn't that I didn't want to answer you, it was that I had no clue to the problem. I read a lot on MQResources which is a forum for machine quilting and is mainly LAing. Seems most of these problems are either tension or just need to change to a diff. brand of thread. One brand of thread will run in 1 machine but may not run in another. I am very happy that you got your problem solved Mary.

i had the same problem with loopy stitching. they were so bad it was like looking at tumbleweeds on the back. my bobbin tension has to be really really loose, the screw on the bobbin case. nothing is more frustrating! glad you got it figured out. mine can change from bobbin to bobbin, so i feel your pain!

I had that problem on the HQ. I completely re-threaded the machine and that fixed my problem. Anyway, glad you got your problem fixed.

I am having a problem with my New Joy Frame, I have done all the troubleshooting, balancing, tension, new needle, new thread, etc. but it keeps breaking the needle thread. It worked fine until halfway through the quilt then time after time breaking the thread.
any suggestions

trim, you may have your quilt too tight on the frame, and you might want to put some sewers aid, a silicone thread conditioner on your thread.

I had that problem, i got part way through my second quilt and the thread started breaking every few inches and there was rats nest all over the back. i had rethreaded the machine tried a new bobbin nothing worked so i pushed machine aside and removed the bobbin, the bobbin case and there was the Problem. i had enough lint under the case to make a pin cushion, now every second bobin i remove the case and ck for lint. my sewing machine repair man said lint was the biggest problem he sees, they hold a sewing class each week and he said he had never seen such dirty machines, he finely ask the women if they dusted thier homes? then told them to look at thier machines and treat them like they would the rest of thier home, remove the dust and lint. since i have been doing this i have never had another problem with any of my machines. i do not touch my tension, if there is a auto setting i use that but otherwise it is straight factory settings. oh, i have never use the clear thread, personal pref is cotton for me. just me, nothing wrong with it.
