Edges of precut pieces

Post by Chrissy1 » Thu May 28, 2009 1:35 am

I have seen several lovely packets of charms, jelly rolls and the bigger squares. All seem to have the edging on them we used to do with pinking shears. Here is my question. If using them to sew a quilt, how do you measure the 1/4 seam? Thank you for any help or advice.

I sew them from the solid edge and don't match the pinking edge points. I have found the pinking to be so small it doesn't cause any problems with the 1/4 seam.

I always use a 1/4" foot, so I line up the outside edge of the pinks.

Chrissy, it is a pretty small pinked edge, at least on the charm packs and jelly rolls I have been blessed to work with.

I think the most important thing would be consistency. Once you have decided where your seamline is, stick to it throughout the project so your pieces come out even.

I did a quilt top from jelly rolls a few weeks ago...wow, it went together SO fast with those precut strips!! Bada-bing, bada-BOOM!

I used charm squares for the first time a couple of months ago, and I felt like you do, Chrissy! I wasn't sure I liked them. But my Tossed Nine Patch turned out great and I've bought some more charm squares. I did like xteacher/Karon - I lined up the outside edge of the 'pinks' with the 1/4" foot bar. Guess I just had to 'get used to' a new thing! Good luck!

Wow, thank you all so very much. I have seen some darling packets of charms and really wanted to give them a try, now I will. I appreciate all the advise.

I line mine up with the tips of the pinked edge. I eyeball each charm square because every once in a while I come across one that is cut crooked so it's short on one edge.
