binding

Post by Linda71 » Wed May 13, 2009 5:29 pm

Hi, I have a baby quilt panel to finish off. The top is poly/cotton, and the backing is fleece. The top and bottom are the same size. I want a 2" finished binding(using the fleece for binding material). Do I just cut a piece of fleece 2 1/2 and attach it? Or do I add a strip of material all around the quilt so that the binding encases 2 inches of quilt? Help! Linda

I've never made a finished binding that large so I won't make any suggestioins. I'm sure someone will answer your question. The people on this forum are wonderful with hints and suggestions.

I've never used the fleece to bind with before. I imagine you would not double it, it would be too thick for your machine. When ever I use fleece or Minkee for backing, I just make the back bigger and fold it over the top and hem it.

I would think that fleece would be too thick to bind a quilt. I think it would be much easier just to use some cotton fabric. When I do cotton bindings I cut them 2 and 1/2 inch but then I double the fabric to make it stronger, but if you double the fleece it would way to thick.

Linda I have made quilt blankets with the fleece on the back and cotton on the front. Leave two inches of your fleece backing all around, fold in an inch, (you can miter the corners) and then fold to the front. I used a pretty stitch on the top side to finish off. If you think the fleece makes it too thick, just leave an inch all around and fold it to the front. I too think the 2" would be too wide. But it's what you like.
