Sewing right on the batting -- Help!

I have a pattern for a Christmas tree skirt that tells you to sew the fabric right on the batting. I've never sewn directly on batting so my very first question is how do I use my 1/4" foot on the batting, won't it get caught in the batting?

If anybody has any additional tips, please post ... today is one of those days I'm dumber than dirt.

JoAnn... do you sew the top of the fabric to the batting? do you make like a sandwich with out the bottom piece and sew like that?

Would it be like quilting only without the backing of the quilt?

Or am I as dumb as dirt???

Hi Chriss,

Actually it's done like the strip stocking. You sew two strips right side together to the batting and then flip the one strip. Then stitch the next one on top, again right sides together. Hope this makes sense.

Joann, if you are using a dense batting like Warm and Natural, it goes through the machine smoothly when used as a bottom layer. If the lint bugs you, you could spray-baste a piece of fabric stabilizer on the underside.

It's basically foundation piecing using the batting as a foundation. You can even draw lines on Warm and Natural to help with placement of your fabric pieces. I've done this several times and haven't had any trouble with it.

I've been making table runners that are quilt-as-you-go. I layer the backing and the batting and THEN sew the pieces to the batting on top. I am not sewing very much directly to the batting (just a stitch or two), as I have the pieces of fabric between the batting and the presser foot, and the backing fabric between the feed dogs and the batting.

Are your directions to sew the fabric pieces to the batting, and THEN to back it??

Oh, yeah - and I don't use my 1/4" foot - I use the walking foot and use the edge of it to line up for the 1/4".

Just double checked the christmas stockings in El's book. She shows just sewing the strips right onto the cotton batting with regular foot. I would try it and see if you need a walking foot, but my guess is you probably won't if you take it a bit slowly.
