Sashing Strips

Post by Bransmom » Mon Jun 30, 2008 6:59 am

I want to make a quilt using 12 1/2" unfinished blocks with sashing strips between them. I'm trying to get as much size as I can so I was thinking of cutting the strips 3 1/2" (would be 3" after sewn on). Would this be too big?

Thanks!

I think it would look nice! Also, are you going to use different fabric for cornerstones or is the sashing going clear across?

One of my unfinished quilts uses 3 1/2" sashing with 3 1/2" Churn Dash blocks for the cornerstones.

No, no cornerstones. I'm trying to do this FAST while my DH is away on a fishing trip. Nothing fancy, but it's all fishing fabrics.

I think 3 1/2 strips would look great. Go for it!

Evie, what a great idea....churndash corner stones.

I have done this before, and it turned out great. Another option, if you have the fabrics, would be to frame each block with a 2" or so border. Then sew them together instead of sashing. This will give you sort of a checker board look.
