Lite steam-a-seam 2 problems

Post by morgans4 » Thu Apr 10, 2008 9:13 pm

Boy oh boy. A few days ago I posted a question about Wonder Under and told about the paper not coming off after ironing. Someone told me she loved lite steam-a-seam, so I got some last night. Well, I got Lite Steam-A-Seam 2. That's all the lite they had. Tonight I read the directions and it seemed simple enough. Now I'm wondering if maybe I'm the simple one. I can't get the glue to stick to the fabric!!! What the heck am I doing wrong. Here's how I do it...
I checked to see which paper would come off easiest, then drew the pattern on the other paper. I cut it out, and attempted to get the back paper off. When it comes off, the glue comes off with it. For the past hour I've been trying to pry the glue off the paper and put it onto the fabric. The way I understand the directions, I have to press the fabric at the end, but I'm wondering... do I have to iron this to the fabric before I cut out the pattern and attempt to remove the backing paper? I'm just so unhappy with these results. I'm sure it must be an operator error.
Also, the way it reads, it's a permanent thing, once you get it ironed on. Does that mean I don't have to do any sewing? Won't it come loose if I don't?

Yes, you have to iron it to the fabric and then peel off the paper and iron the fabric again to get it to stick. I wasted a lot of Steam a Seam trying to figure it out when I first bought it. The directions stink! I took it to guild and had someone show me how to use it.
And it's better to sew around it, because I noticed some of the edges were coming loose after a time. It may have been from not heating it evenly or the glue not being right on the edge. For a project I plan on keeping a long time I would sew around it.

steam a seam is fusible on both sides, so you iron it on to the fabric and then iron it on to the block. Double sided fusible is for raw edge applique and not for El's method.

I usually iron the fabril them place the fusible on the fabric and iron it. Let it cool. Then it comes off easily. Did you was your fabric first? That could alter the outcome as well. You want your fabric free of any sizing. Good luck. Lori

Thanks to all of you for answering. The instructions do stink. No where does it say that you have to iron it on twice. To me, "stick it to the wrong side of the fabric" is something you do with you fingers.
I did wash the fabric first. I always wash, the minute I walk in with new fabric I turn on the washer and toss the stuff in so I don't have to ever wonder later. Sometimes I use fabric softener liquid, but I didn't to this load.
Well, I guess I have the answer to my question. Iron it on to both fabrics. More like Wonder Under with 2 sheets of paper. Thanks so much for your help.

not sure if this is something you tried but I have used a straight pin to start to peel off one side then stick to wrong side of fabric and lightly iron then cut pattern then use straight pin to get underneath again then stick to next fabric piece. I always wash my fabric first and put in dryer with fabric sheet..just like when its a quilt to use...I hope this helps

No, I use steam-a-seam lite for everything. I don't iron it until I am ready to adhere it to the fabric. Yes, it is very thin and the glue portion will come up if you don't stick it properly. After I take the sheet of paper off one side. I lay the reminder on the fabric, I then use an old-fashioned rolling pin to make sure I get a good stick. Draw my pattern on the other paper, cut it out and then slowly pull the paper off the back when I am ready to adhere it to the other fabric.
