Thank you knitnoid for explaining the why's and how to's . For me I just want the one side of the quilt to show white and the other side to show blue - not both colours at the same time . If I did the binding the same width and the seam did fall on the fold , do you see it being a problem ?

This is such a great site to ask questions and have everyone respond. I am a quilter not one a person who enjoys sewing so it's that part of things I have problems with . Thanks to everyone for all your help !

If the seam falls on the fold, the binding will be the same color on both sides.

Sounds great. I do alot of my quilts, reversible, they ussually compliment each other, so binding can be the same. When I do need a different binding, I have had great success doing it this way: I cut a variety strips 1-1/2 - 3" from all fabrics used in quilt, sew them together lenghtwise until the piece is about 12-15" wide, then I cut on the bias 2-1/2-3" wide, using my 60 degree angle, then sew them together end to end, fold in half and apply to quilt just like double fold binding. When you fold over to reverse side and stitch down binding is same on both sides, but it appears like the stripes on a candy cane. I use this often. I even do this for an inner border sometimes.
I figure what the heck if it takes a couple more hours, I've already put alot of time in and after all the binding is the finishing touch to my masterpieces, why not make it great. I can't remember how or where I learned how to make this binding, but it really is simple. I've only been sewing for 4 years and am totally addicted to making quilts. I just have to start making smaller versions, I don't know what to do with all the bed sized ones I have that are finished. Wish I could sell tham and then have more money to buy more fabric and make more. I hope you will try this, it really is great. Oh, you will ask how much to make, after the first set of strips cut on the bias, you can measure and it will give you a guide as to how many more sets you need. Jackie

I know a method, but might be a little hard to explain. But I give it a try. Take your two different fabrics both cut 1 1/2 " wide x length you need, then place them right sides together. sew a 1/2" seam down one side of the strips. Then sandwich your quilt between the 1/2 inch side ,will require pinning. the other 1" side of the ajoined strips will be off the the quilt, to the side. Now sew a 1/4" seam down the 1/2" side that has the quilt pinned BETWEEN the 2 layersof fabric.Next you would take the 1" fabric sides, seperate so that one fabric folds to 1 side and the other fabric folds to the other.you will need to fold under the raw edges on both sides and I usually finish mine by hand stitching. Hope this helps, if not I can post a picture this evening when I get home so that it will make more since.
