Folded Border question

Post by dsf618 » Mon Nov 05, 2007 2:58 am

I am making the Strip Tulip quilt - it calls for a folded border - 1 1/4 inch fabric folded in half and sewen on. After this border is sewn on the quilt do I fold it over so that the folded edge is on the outside or do I leave it and add the next border to the sewn edge?

Is that as clear as mud?!?

Thanks,
Deb

You leave it as it is sewn ( do not fold it back) then take your next border and attach it over the raw edge. I'm clear as mud too!!

Deb, to try to clarify...
--fold the narrow strip for the folded border *wrong sides together*
--stitch in place along outside edge of the quilt
--add the next border by laying it *right sides together* (as usual) and lining up the raw edges of quilt and border strip
--sew the next border in place as usual
--when you open up the wide border strip to press it, your narrow folded border will point *toward the center of the quilt* and your wide border will fold outward (as usual)

I hope this helps; it took my brain a while to get around the folded border, too!

I know how confusing it can be, but it's pretty! I had to reread instructions on this one too. You got a lot of good advice. Just want you to remember when you sew your folded border on, you need to sew less than a 1/4" seam since you don't want your stitches to show. I eyeball a 1/8" seam. Afterall, it's only to hold it in place while you sew a regular border around it.
