Thread painting

I want to do some thread painting and need to know if I am making a design and then placing it onto a garment do I need to use a certain kind of stabilizer on the back. I know the technic but never added it to a garment. I have always used it on the final piece. {like a pillow top} So if someone can help me I would appreciate it. Thanks

Nancy prince has a book called quilt savvy simple thread painting she is an award winning artist and does wonderful work - her book has patterns and step by step I would definantly get it - I think oasis checked into this back in the spring dont know how it panned out though

I did get the book and it is very nice. Just haven't had time to concentrate on the technique.

I'm hoping after Christmas I can get a new machine with the proper darning/free motion foot then I want to have at it. The technique facinates me but my machine is a 40 year old Kenmore and does real well with straight and a little zigzag but isn't quite up to thread painting.

If you get a chance, please post some pictures of the items you used the technique on. I'd like to get some ideas.
