Need help for bulges, seam bulges that is..
Evenin' everyone,
I was the one that took the "Pressing Basics" class at Quilt University a while back (see How to Press thread). Anyhow, so I feel like I have a good grasp on this issue, but still at times, bulges persist at some intersections. It's usually just a regular intersection, too, like where four seams meet.
I have been using a lot of fabric from Moda, which does seem heavier than many others, and I do use the "Essentials" thread sold by Connecting Threads (next to no lint), and I do use steam and a cotton setting on my old iron. Any clues? I am alternating seam direction for easy "butting up" of seams. This one really has me bugged. Sure would appreciate some direction here, thanks.

I either press seams to one side or press them open. . ..It all depends on 'bulk'. I've used the thread that you mentioned too and like it........lots less expensive than Aurifil, which I use Lots of to piece my tops.

El uses the method of taking out some of the stitches at the intersections. This makes a huge difference, and the seams still hold very good. It is usually about 2 and then presses the intersection down flat. The intersection and bulge never comes when I do this. Use a hot steam for this press.

Hi TheKid,
Are you talking about when she makes a baby 4 patch out of the seams at the intersection or something else? I forgot all about this technique! It would be nice if it were that simple. Thanks,

Eleanore's book Christmas at bears paw ranch has answers to this question.

If you press the seams just flat before you press it to the side, it leaves less bulk.

Hi zfatcat,
Are you talking about "setting the seam" here? If so, I do that, always. Let me know if you mean something else, tho. Thanks a bunch, much appreciated.
Happy quilting
