How far out do you quilt?

Post by HomespunMary » Wed Jul 25, 2007 9:05 am

When you quilt your borders, how far out towards the edge do you quilt? Do you leave the 1/4 seam allowance unquilted, or do you quilt that area as well and then let the binding overlap the quilted seams?

I usually quilt all the way off the fabric. It's eaiser to end the thread and it makes sure the binding catches the loose end.

sewbug, do you mean that you go all the way out when sewing the end of the seam, or that you keep quilting continuously also in the seam allowance? If you for instance do stippling on the border, would you keep making the turns before you reached the seam allowance or would you make the turns just at the edge of the fabric?

I would make that decision based on the quilting pattern. If it was a certain design then I would probably keep the whole design intact away from the edge. If it was a random design I would quilt off the edge.

I ditto Sewbug. It depends on the pattern.

If I am doing an all over pantograph, I quilt past the edges. If I am doing custom work, I quilt to about 1/4 of an inch in. I have the quilt "sandwich" basted all around by this point so that stitching takes care of any of the fabric not getting caught in the binding stitching.
