Remember, too, that you should be PRESSING your seams - not IRONING them. Pressing means that you place the iron on the piece and then lift it up. Ironing involves moving the iron. Ironing can distort the fabric.

I tried open seam pressing. the quilt fell apart after only a few washings. What ever the instructions say, that is what I do, I figured they should have "ironed" out all those problems before they published the instructions!
I usuall only have issues when there are alot of pieces going together at the same spot, like a bear paw.

Hi there,
I recently completed a 4 week online course called "Pressing Basics" taught by Myrna Giesbrecht at www.quiltuniversity.com. Myrna developed this class from her "Press for Success" book.
It was an awesome class!! I learned SO much. How you press, and which direction you press your seams makes ALL the difference in the world. This class was only $36, plus the cost of your fabric. The class project was a table topper 36 or 44" square. I'll try to place a picture of my quilt top in with the photo section. This class has revolutionized my quilting! You get a LOT of help, both from Myrna and the other classmates.
Blessings,

Granma2five - that sounds like a very informative and helpful class. What's the most important lesson you learned?

Thanks for the tip on "QuiltUniversity.com."
I think I am going to take the "Minature Landscape" class starting July 7th. Landscape quilts just facinate me but I can't seem to get the hang of it.

Re: Beginner Quilter needs help
I did a stupid thing tonight. I am cutting out pieces for a queen size quilt for my bed. I have to cut many pieces and was in the process of cutting 15 51/2 x 12 1/2 pieces. Three times I cut the pieces 5 1/2 x 12. Don't know what I was doing wrong but I will try again after DD has her bath.

Re: Beginner Quilter needs help
The most important when pressing is to press in the direction the pattern calls for. that way when you start to put the blocks together the seams will "nest"together which is why you press in the direction the patterns say.
