Quilt in a Day Forums

With tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires and floods that happen all over, I thought if we banded together, we could get some quilts out to those people that have lost everything due to disasters.

Blocks are mostly 12-1/2 unfinished, and we use the 'scrappy star' free pattern on the website here a lot, with a white/cream/tan background.

I am currently working on quilts for wildfire victims in California.

If you know someone who has lost everything and needs a 'quilt hug' please let me know!

The stockings for troops project is close to being all sent out, and when that's done I will be happy to pitch in for your project, Cindy! I'm looking forward to it and love you for what you're doing!

I have 2 twin size quilt tops just about finished. I want to put them in the mail on Monday. One has a backing fabric, the other one doesn't. Since I cannot (don't know how, but eventually will learn), I'm hoping, as you said before, you can get them quilted and off to California fire victims. If so, pls send me your address. If not, let me know and maybe someone else could put them together. (I'm working on a number of items, and to take the time to learn to quilt now would take too much time--I can spend time on the "sewing parts" of things and hopefully those who know how to do the quilting will be able to do that part.) I've gotten one twin sized top done today. . . have to go into town tomorrow (forgot a couple of things!)

Will have another top done tomorrow, and can spend Monday quilting them!

Hi everyone! This is my first time on here. I was reading all your comments on all the wonderful projects you all have going on. Do you know if anyone has ever done anything for the elderly? I don't know about you, but I have a real soft spot for little kids and old "kids". It breaks my heart to see so many of these dear old souls tucked away in nursing homes - some who don't have family or their families don't come to see them. Have any of you ever made lap quilts and taken them to some of the nursing homes? This is a project that has been on my mind for a long time and I'm ashamed to say, I haven't actually pursued it. So, I was wondering if any of you had ever done it and if so, how was it received where you live?

Hi Primlover. Sure gets cold where you live. Is there a guild in your area? One of the guilds I belong to does, infact, make lap quilts for the elderly in nursing homes.

I worked at a Nursing home for 10 years and yes the residents loved the lap robes.. and were used all the time.. Some used them while in wheel chairs and a number had them on their beds when they took their naps. We had a group of women that made them, a lot of them were crochet, I used to donate yarn to them. They are always appreciated.

Primlover - I work at a nursing home (have for 22 years now) and I tell you, they love them. They are washed very frequently though so wear out sooner than what you might at home. For those who don't have family this time of year can be a very sad time. We get many donations though of socks, kleenex, lotions and stuff. Homemade stuff is not as readily available. They would love them. It is project well worth persuing.
