Joplin Tornado Project Comfort

Post by FarmChick » Tue May 31, 2011 8:23 am

This is from two LQSs in the Joplin area, if anyone is wishing to help...

To our quilting friends,

The outpouring of help, concern and prayers has been overwhelming and a true testament to God's grace and mercy. The people of Joplin need continued prayers and will need help recovering for years to come. We will not know the full scope of damage or loss of life for some time. It is a time to be truly grateful for friends and family.

A near term need that quilters may respond to is the donatinon of quilts as the tornado victims start to rebuild their lives. All quilt sizes are needed. The preference for donations is the following: nice, new, home made quilts of 100% cotton. Please send only those quilts you would be happy to receive yourself. If possible, send a new, matching, solid sheet set equal to size of quilt folded together with each quilt, placed in a large Ziplock bag and labeled as to size, ie queen quilt, queen sheet set. If quilts are sent in labeled bags with sheets they will be easily sorted and disseminated to those in need. These quilts may be sent to the following stores: Bittersweet Quilts
attn: Tornado Relief Effort
8133 W Hwy 86
Joplin, MO 64804

Block By Block
attn: Tornado Relief Effort
530 W Fir Road
Carthage, MO 64836

The breadth and width of devastation and the number of people affected is unfathomable. Another way to help is by making a donation to the American Red Cross and denote that it is for the Joplin tornado victims.

Truly grateful,
Bittersweet Quilts & Block by Block

You can also google search "churches in Joplin, MO" and see a list of churches & denominations to contact.
Our quilt guild at church is "adopting" St. Philip's Episcopal church and our minister has gotten in touch with their minister.
Besides the quilts, we are trying to come up with some creative ways to help out.
By having personal contact, we get to know specifics of needs.

We are also planning to collect new children's books and holiday toys to send.
