As many of you know, I belong to our local chapter of PHiP, (Parrot Heads in Paradise) It is a social club that raises money for charity. We also do things like volunteer to feed the eldery at nursing homes, do road clean up etc. Our motto is "party with a Purpose"

Lat year, at our large fundraiser, we raised 33,000 for the local good samaritan free clinic, that serves the uninsured residents of our community, and 2000 to the local museum. I am on the charity selection committee, and let me tell you the range of charities is astounding. Our biggest fundraiser of the year is "havanna daydreamin" and several of you at paducah helped me find tropical fabrics I am planning to use to make some beach totes for the silent auction during our 2010 event. While I was at Peach's I gave her all of the tropical fabric I have so she could cut totes for me, since right now I cannot use a rotary cutter. We were discussing how many I would like and when I got home, I emailed one of the event coordinators to see what she would like. Karla wrote "The beach totes look nice! I've included others for their imput on the matter. Several would be silent auction novelites! We've offered painted denim jackets in the past & handmade items can be HOT sellers.
I also wondered about them offered as QCPH merchandise stock?? QCPH is in the process of forming our own Foundation for our charitible contributions. Besides HDD and the golf outing, QCPH has forwarded excess funds from our bank accounts to other worthwhile causes. With our large membership at present & current membership retention- it has been wonderful to make a difference to various charities in our community.
I don't know what you think of this idea- but bags NOT offered in the auction could be for future years- or sold at our merchandise area with a note that proceeds would go to the quilters choice of charity?? A little extra to keep track of..but perhaps the crafter would like the income to be donated to their passionate cause?? "
So fellow quilters, I have a feel good project for you. Pam and I have made a pattern that is super easy. Pictures are below. If I buy the fabric and send it to you, can you sew up some totes? HDD is in February, so we have pleanty of time. I have emailed Karla back asking how many she thinks we would like to have, but if it is a lot, I can't do that many alone. We can decide if you want to designate a particular charity or if you want the proceeds to go into our general charity fund. Surf around on our website and you can see what all we support.

UPDATE Our event, Havana Daydreamin, was held last night. The totes were a big success, We only had a couple left and we will hang on to them for future events. I dont have a total as of yet, but I think a rough guess is 30,000 dollars raised. The Charity was ARC of Rock Island County, (Aid to Retarded Citizens) and they have been hit very hard by budget cuts. Thanks to everyone who helped made this success possible!
