quilting for a charity

Well, I got good and sick of feeling sorry for myself and moping...so a trip to the fabric store was in order. Hadn't been able to dream up a project for anyone, but I knew that starting a fresh project would help me pick up my spirits. I bought some sweet baby fabrics and will be making some small quilts to donate to the Garden of Innocence. It is a special memorial garden and cemetery for infants found abandoned in San Diego county. Each baby is buried with a blanket. Donations pay for burial, a service, and a marker.

Sewing to show love for a baby who never got any is helping to ease my worries. I love working with the soft colors and prints, too.

Oh God!!! I have tears rolling down on my cheeks... This so sad, heartbreaking!!! Like Carin, I would cry while making the quilts!!!

You know, at first I thought this would just be too gut-wrenching for me, too. But as I looked at fabrics and thought about simple designs, I began to feel more like this is a project by which I can show my gratitude.

I have two healthy children, both of whom were wanted. I cannot imagine the depth of desperation and sickness in someone who abandons a helpless newborn to die...BUT, I grew up in an unsafe, abusive home and could easily have ended up in very horrible situations. There for the grace of God go I.

It is a very very sad circumstance that unfortunately happens in every State. It is also a sad thing for an unwanted preemie or full term baby to be put to rest without parents to provide for a proper burial. A quilt made with love seems "right" in that instance too. Sad but an unfortunate thing that happens frequently all over. If you are interested, might check with your local State hosp. This is an act of love that everyone just can't do, for personal reasons though.

So sorry to hear that in 2008, in a developed country, we need such a charity. Aren't there 'safe places' to give a baby with no questions asked??

Anyway, this is not a discussion of society's ills. Rather I commend you for giving something so important of yourself to someone else.

I'm sure what you make will be beautiful.

Dawne, we do have a law now, at least in California, under which a parent can leave an unwanted baby at a hospital, fire station, etc., without fear of prosecution. I think people should be held accountable for their actions, but there is now NO reason to leave a baby alone to die. So many, many people would be happy to love and raise them!

Maybe word just isn't out yet, or people are still just too scared--?
But as I said, there for the grace of God go I.
