Here is the pattern for the fleece scarf.
Directions for Fun Fleece Scarf
MATERIALS:
One 10 inch x 60 inch piece of polyester fleece (or whatever size you want to make it)
One 8 ½ inch (8 inch finished) pieced quilt block (whatever pattern of block you like and a size square just a bit less than the width of the scarf you chose
One 8 ½ inch square (or size of block you chose) of coordinating fabric to back the block with (the block does not have batting)
1 yard of 1 ½ in bias binding
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Make 2 inch deep cuts every 1 inch on the two ends of the piece of fleece.
2. Layer the backing piece and the pieced block wrong sides together and quilt in any way you choose (there is no batting in this block)
3. Add the binding to the block, either fabric binding or store-bought bias binding.
SUGGESTED DIRECTIONS FOR DETERMINING PLACEMENT OF THE SQUARE BLOCK:
a. Drape the scarf around the neck so that the ends are hanging evenly and put a pin in one of the ends of the scarf where it hangs in front of the chest
b. Pin the quilt block onto the scarf at the level of the pin so that the top and bottom of the block are pinned, but the sides are left un-pinned
c. Drape the scarf around the neck again and put the opposite end of the scarf through the sides of the pinned quilt block so that the pinned block holds the scarf around the neck
d. Adjust the level of the quilt block so that the scarf is comfortable around the neck
4. When you are sure of the placement of the block, top-stitch the top and bottom of the block to the scarf just on the inside of the binding strips. Make sure to leave the sides of the block un-stitched so that the opposite end of the scarf can be put through the pocket the block makes, which will hold the scarf in place around the neck.
NOTES:
1. Website, quilt.com/QuiltBlocksPage.html, has patterns for different size blocks, if you don’t have one.
2. I’ve discussed with Joann (Bransmom) who brought this project to our attention, about the colors for the block. Her thoughts are that the block could have different colors or patterned fabrics, that would make it easier and “funner” for the block

Am I wrong in thinking that the scarfs are to be blue? I don't have blue fleece and the fabric store here is quite picked over. I love this pattern.

Cathy, According to Bransmom, who posted this project, the scarf must be any shade of blue. We discussed that the block on the scarf could be other colors, blending with blue. She said the group doing this project specified blue only. Maybe we'll have to find some online, I know the local quilt shop here doesn't even have fleece, so I'm going to check out wal-mart, much to my dismay, and then have to go to the fabric shops away from my area and see what they have.
Bransmom says they don't have to be done right away, so we have some time to find fabric. I figure I'll make some blocks in the meantime and then add them when I get fleece. I have some really cute fabric that could be easily fussy cut for block centers of just about any size block.
I really liked this pattern when I saw it and it looks very easy.
Have fun, HUGS and Blessings, carol/kittyquilt

The scarves for the project do have to be blue and I am having a tough time finding blue fleece here too. I am knitting some now but the fleece ones would go real fast. I may check on using a white or ivory and then adding blue ribbons, rick-rack or maybe even with blue beads threaded on the fringe.
I have to say, I love the color of the scarf in the photo, it is one of my favorite colors!
Happy stitching!

Maybe Bransmom can check with the organization and let them know what we're hoping to do and see if they could okay some other colors. We don't want to intrude on their project, we want to help, but there are many of us who cannot crochet or knit and still want to help. And finding blue fleece seems to be difficult for everyone, so maybe, just maybe, they would make an exception for the fleece ones, seeing that they really have a need.
Bransmom, can you check this out? Thanks, carol/kittyquilt

Kitty- the scarf is beautiful. I like the idea of a quilt square added to the fleece. Wow, I really like the color in your photo.

Another thought, if we cannot do anything except blue scarves with decorations, maybe we could make the scarf from blue flannel. I guess it could be like a tube, with just one seam and that seam turned to the back and then a block put on the front. Just a thought. carol/kittyquilt

Oh that is so cute. Maybe I'll try it. It seems so easy to do. I know Wal Mart has some blue fleece.
