Punk Rock Quilts?

I've seen the most interesting phenonemon in my daughter's high school. I've always made my daughter quilts, but some of her friends showed quite an interest in them. After I made one of the guys one, all the kids went crazy to have one. They love to dress 'punk', with multi-colored hair(but these are all the kids who lead the local teen charity group). The quilt I made for her friend was covered in skulls, with his nickname worked into it. I can't tell you how many 'punk quilts' I've made since then! When the bus pulled into school, after the school jazz ensemble went to a competition, there was a steady stream of my quilts leaving the bus(with lots of 'hi mama' as they went by!). I would have thought that these teens would have thought that a quilt was an 'old fashioned' gift, but you can't believe how much they appreciate them! So, next time you see someone dressed a little different, you just might have more in commom than you think!

Doesn't that just give you a "warm" fuzzy feeling!

Theresa,
My experience matches yours. I know a lot of kids who appear to dress 'oddly' or in a way that might shock someone [neon red hair] that are really good people.

In fact....when it comes to charitable works and global consciousness these kids, in my area, are way more active than any of the 'bring home to mama' type kids. The ones in khaki pants, pristine white sneakers etc.., are the most rude around here.

Never judge a book by it's cover remains true.

I'd love to see some of your 'punk' quilts. Do you have pictures? I'm sure these quilts will stay with these teens well into their adult years.

My son has a skull belt and I just wonder why but I let it go b/c his heart is good and he's so open with me about life. I still don't know where it came from except in many ways it's another fashion trend. I'm sure strangers look at him and wonder about the skull belt. I wonder what someone would think of skulls on a quilt? It sort of makes me giggle to think of it. Very non-traditional ;)

Can you post a picture of one of these quilts? I'd love to be able to see one so I can make one, too! My DD picked black flannel with flames and skulls for the back of her grad quilt. It'll have stars in FF for the front, witha black/dark blue for the background.

AS my DD would say, the quilts must be "pimp". I know - pimp isn't the word I would use to describe how wonderful something looks, but at our local high school, that is the current "word". The kids love the skull things. I pick out fabric for DD that had roses, barbed wire, and skulls all on black. She loved it and so did her friends. Yes, please, post a picture.

That's great! I was a band mom and was always so impressed with the kids. The quilt idea sounds like it could really take off, and, who knows, you may be inspiring some future quilters!

Any chance of showing us some pictures???

Great idea. Back "in the day" my daughter's hair was variably: long, short, shaved in the back, shaved all over except for bangs of blue, red, green or whatever color struck her fancy. Into the "goth" look with black clothes, lips, fingernails.

Still was taking care of many of her friends, some orphaned, some homeless, dating a guy with 14 inch Mohawk. All were nice kids, some very needy. I just kept biting my lips about appearances... and letting them come over to eat.

Eventually, appearances changed. But not the good hearts and kindnesses.

I won't let DD age 13 get any piercings or wear heavy make up but I will let her wear her hair any color she likes. It's only hair and doesn't bother me at all if she wants pink stars painted on it. I like the idea of punk quilts. I'll look for some punk fabric!
