USA Quilters are lucky

Post by roseytoes » Wed Oct 10, 2007 10:16 am

It was a beautiful day here in the Northeast so I decided I wanted to go out for a drive. I drove to Lancaster County, picked up a few yards of hand dyed fabric. I stopped for lunch and I was seated next to a large group of quilters from England. I was having a wonderful conversation with the ladies and was shocked when they told me that they pay (= to US dollars) 20 a yard over in the UK! The ladies said that they each purchased 60 yards on this trip. Even with the shipping to send the fabric home it was much cheaper here. I paid 6.95 a yard for my fabric today. I feel like I got a bargin.

I hope you told them about QIAD. I just came back from vacation in the northeast, PA included. Hershey PA of course included. Went to 2 quilt shops uop there and they carry a lot of things the midwest do not, had to get keepsakes there to go with my chocolate

Yes, we are very fortunate. That's why I don't balk at paying $8 - $9 a yard for my fabric at the LQS. And I can SEE it at the LQS, I don't have to try to blend and match colors on the computer which is inaccurate. I know how lucky I am that I get the opportunity to see and buy whenever I want. Some here don't have that luxury.

Yep, you guys sure are lucky! I'd be extremely happy if I found quilt fabric for only 20 US dollars here... :-)

OK here's a story for you. I fell in love with the "He loves me,he loves me not fabric" I saw in some quilts on here. Sourced it out in USA and Australia. For the same amount of fabric it would have cost $108-00 US plus postage of around $30.00 and in Australia it was going to cost me $336.00 AU plus ?? postage.

Now that is a huge difference.....more than triple the price!!!!

12 yards X $9.00 US
12 metres X $28.00 AU

I wouldn't mind betting that HomespunMary pays even more!

I'm confused. I've never been out of the US so of course I don't know squat about different economies. If someone from another country orders from QIAD, she will pay the same price for fabric as Americans but pay a high price mailing fee? Is the mailing cost the same if I bought the fabric and sent it to someone in another country?

sewbug,
I pay the same price as you do. I pay by credit card and they do the $ conversion from US to AU when they charge me. The postage from QIAD is added on to the credit card charges and is usually around $30 US depending on the weight. I think the postage would be basically the same no matter where it was sent from in the USA

have a dear friend from england and she quotes the high prices as well and then points out that not only is the price so high but the selection is not nearly as varied
