Fabric from China

Post by TooMuchFabric » Thu Aug 23, 2007 2:29 pm

Has anyone heard anything negative about the fabric that is being made in China? I had seen a pretty pattern the other day but was reluctant to purchase when the end of the bolt had a "made in China" notation.

At this point, I won't knowingly buy ANYTHING made in China.

Me either IowaGal. The US standards should be stricly enforced if companies are going to continue to outsource. That could bring some work back home here. Uh oh, is that a political statement. I don't mean it to be. It's personal because we are buying those products not knowing what they might contain.

I think we should always be careful of whatever we buy, no matter where it is from outside the US. There are few countries that have the same safety standards that we are used to here so it's good to be aware of what we are buying.

I ditto IowaGal!! I am getting sick and tired of the quality that is appearing from China....I really miss "made in the USA" on our goods. A friend had some 5" squares she got from Connecting Threads and showed them to me. She thought they were so pretty...and they were, but the fabric quality looked way too open in the weave for me. I wouldn't buy them...then I looked at the bottom of the package and there it was....made in China. I was really surprised to know that fabric is showing up from China. I will certainly be reading the end of the bolt from now on.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but almost all fabrics are now being manufactured in the Orient. That is one of the reasons it takes so long to get it. I am not sure, but I believe that all of the major US fabric companies have their fabrics printed overseas. To my knowledge, they are designed here in the US and printed over there. It is a sad fact but due to the cost of goods in the US, labor unions, and economies, more and more manufacturers are going elsewhere for one or more parts of their businesses.

Japan, Korea and China has some beautiful fabrics, however, the retailers only get what they order. This boils down to what they think the consumer will spend and the margin of profit to be made. Kind of sad. Where are the good ole days?

We attended a distributor meeting put on by Northcutt last winter. Many companies have all of their materials made in Korea. Can you believe this? Amazing.
With all of the items being recalled that is made in China, it really makes one wonder? Now, why doesn't the US company that has the contract with the China company know that this is going on? It really makes me question the materials as well. But,we all buy them and think the material is great. I trust it is.

I think that you will find made in the USA isn't all it is cracked up to be. I find many items to be poorly made and it is because most people just don't give a darn about the quality of their work. In the USA as well as over seas. They just are earning their wages and the bottom line is production. You just have to look at the product and see if it is made well and then buy it or not.
