How many of you do a light colored quilt top with a dark backing? Are you happy with how it looks when it's done? For the quilt I mentioned in the thread "Vote on a fabric" the top is light and I just saw the maroon sale QIAD fabric with a coffee theme. My quilt thread will be light, so everything will show on the back. What are your thoughts? There is also a light colored version of the same fabric.

I have no answer for you but I saw that fabric yesterday and immediately thought of you. Kind of like it is meant to be. Don't wait to order if you decide to. I waited 3 days and a fabric I really wanted was gone when I finally got around to ordering.

If you are worried about the thread showing and being such a contrast use monofiliment invisible thread and keep on going - get the backing that you wnat and dont let the quilt police tell you any different ha ha it is your quilt plus I think the backing will be stricking cant wait to see pictures

I wouldn't worry about the quilting thread showing on the back. It makes an interesting pattern. What I would be concerned about is the dark backing showing through to the light places on the top. That does happen, even though there is batting between. I would try to keep the backing the same color value as the lightest fabrics on the top.

Thanks. I think I'll get the lighter of the two. I like them both anyway.
How much fabric does one have to order to get reduced shipping? Or are there special times when there is reduced shipping?

I have a backing question. Are you supposed to match the backing to the colors in the front, or would something totally different be all right as long as it's lighter and doesn't show through?
Thank you.

I think the backing can be whatever you want it to be. It doesn't even have to matchthe theme of the quilt unless you want it to. You just have to be careful about the color showing through to the front, apparently.

Lynn,
I have made a few throws with dark backing because I imagined them to be spread on the floor, sat on, cuddled up for warmth and didn't want to worry about it looking dirty/worn too fast. I used the darkest fabric from my print top to keep it simple.
I like seeing the contrast of backing and quilting thread because it looks humanmade and not machined in China.
The idea of making a quilt no one can use for warmth is beyond me.
