Buying stash fabric?

I was wondering how many yards of fabric you should buy when you're buying stash fabric? I saw some fabric yesterday that was just beautiful, but didn't buy anything because I wasn't sure how much since I don't have a project in mind.

I usually buy 10 yds. if I really like it. I never buy any less than 2.5 yds, of anything, lol! Amie

10 yards is a lot! Cindyg you didn't say how much you buy. I'm trying to figure this out. Numbers ladies, numbers - okay, it's not numbers, it's yardage! *laughing* How can I get my stash started if I'm unlearned in the ways of stash buying? *laughing*

Juliejaz - you ARE new. You'll soon learn that I am anal and I'm not ashamed to admit it - LOL. I don't just see fabric and buy it. I pick out a pattern and then go to my LQS and choose the fabrics for that quilt. I always buy a little more than what the pattern calls for just in case. When I'm finished with the quilt whatever fabric is left over goes in my stash. Sometimes I buy a fabric for a quilt and when I start to use it I don't like it so I'll put it in my stash and go pick out something else. I don't just buy pretty fabric so it can sit on a shelf and look pretty but that is what most of the ladies on this forum do. I don't see the sense in it myself. I have to have a project in mind before I get the fabrics. I did step out of my comfort zone once - I bought 2 skinny bolts just to see if it would be a thrill to get fabric in the mail. It wasn't - because it's in my stash and I see it there and don't have a clue as to what I'm going to do with it so I wasted my money. The fabric is very nice and it's pretty but.... I'm really anal about setting the color in my fabrics, washing them, drying them, starching and ironing them before I use them but that's a whole nother story - LOL I've been on here since February and these girls haven't corrupted me yet (except for the 2 skinny bolts).

You guys are funny! 10 yds, is NOT alot of fabric!!!GRIN!! I buy BOLTS of the stuff! OK, I spent $1000 the first 3 hours I was in Paducah! I was there 3 days, I bought close to $3500 in just fabric and had to eat a McD's snack wrap for $1.29 on the way home, that was all the $$ I had left,LOLOLOL!!! Do I have plan for any of it? Nope, I'll probably never even look at it again once it's placed on it's shelf. Sick isn't it? Amie

If I think it will make a nice border, I will buy three yards or so. 30's reproductions I usually only get 1/2 yard unless it's destined for a border. This is because my 30's quilts are usually very scrappy. Other fabrics I usually will get at least a yard. Again, depends on how much I like it.

About the only large amount of fabric I will buy is a light tone on tone. I seldom use white and love these...like the really light Cristy's Rose. I bought about 3 yards of that. I will also buy 3 yards of a green that I love. I use green alot.

Quilterbee....where in the world did you buy all the fabric at Paducah???????? I bought about 5 yards at El's tent sale and about 2 yards at her store.
BUT...I also bought the top of the line Janome sewing machine least you think I spent no money...lol. But you beat me by a mile. I think you are the queen of buying at that show.

See what I mean, Juliejaz??? $3,500 of fabric and no plan to use it or even look at it ever again. That's just way over the top!!!! It must be nice to have all that money laying around to waste.
