calculating yardage
Does anyone have a good resource for calculating yardage for a quilt? i frequently see quilts that I love, but have no idea how much fabric to buy.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I believe Linda said if it's a QIAD quilt, you can call them for the yardage. If you are at the store and your pattern is at home.

I use the Quilting hardbook that JoAnn fabrics has written. Everything is in it for estimating. I keep it handy for referencing for many things. I am not sure they are available any more. But, on amazon.com they might be.

Re: calculating yardage
I just buy lots of fabric and hope for the best! LOL
Which would explain my stash of fabric that I've bought with no particular quilt in mind. I know that's a little backwards, but when QIAD has fabric for $3.00 a yard.. I stock up for those "one of these days" projects
However, I have 2 more small orders on the way from QIAD and then I'm DONE for a while... I don't think I can squeeze another pile of fabric into my closet and I KNOW I can't squeeze any more out of my checkbook!
I just have to look every few days as there is always something new popping up under "sale fabrics" and I sure hate to Miss out!

I use the quilter's calculator too. It is less than $40 and well worth the expense. I usually purchase 1/4 to 1/2 yard extra of each fabric depending on the size of the quilt and the amount of each piece. That is just in case.

I use a pattern to go by or go by the size quilt it is to be finished; like a twin, full, king, etc....I would buy extra fabric of each piece also.

Re: calculating yardage
If I have designed a quilt in EQ6 it tells me the yardage I need for each color. If I am buying fabric because it is on sale or any other reason I buy 3 yards. I have a little card from Quilter's Newsletter that tells me the yardage for linning and binding for the four sizes of quilts. It has always been accurate. Look at it this way. I would never buy a fabric I didn't like so if I have left overs it can go into something else someday.
