Halloween Quilt
Hi everyone, I'm new here. I just saw the Quilt in a Day episode with the firecracker pattern and want to make it in Halloween fabrics as a wallhanging (4 blocks).
I have only made one quilt before and I used Moda fabric. It was high quality fabric. I was working then, making good money. Now I'm a stay at home mom and on a budget! So have any of you used JoAnn's store fabric for a wallhanging? It would be a seasonal thing so it wouldn't get much wear. Is it harder to piece using lower quality fabric? Or does JoAnn's have the same quality fabric as the quilt shops? I wouldn't be hand quilting. I would probably machine stitch in the ditch or take it to be quilted at our local shop after it's done. Thanks for your input!

Re: Halloween Quilt
Mother and I also shop at JoAnn's and have no problem with their fabrics. The only thing that I do different is always buy just a little more then what the pattern calls for because the cut their fabric instead of tearing theirs. Just to make sure that I will have enough..

Yep, I agree---buy a bit extra. When you go to select your fabrics, feel of the quality and also hold up a single layer and look through it. If you can see through it pretty easily do not buy it. You can be selective at Jo-Anns and find great fabric. Even at a few WalMart stores.

Re: Halloween Quilt
I buy 80% of my fabric at Joann's. 5% at various other shops and 15% from online sites. Like said before if it doesn't feel or look good, pass it up. There is oceans of material to choose from.
Have Fun,

Do you have a Hobby Lobby near by?

Re: Halloween Quilt
We don't have a Hobby Lobby but we have a Crafts N Stuff. I don't know if they carry fabric since I've never been in there. There's a quilt shop near my house but the fabric selection is somewhat small compared to other shops I've seen elsewhere. They have a nice assortment of Christmas fabric and a more limited selection of Halloween.
I'll go to JoAnn's and see if I can find some quality Halloween/fall fabric, and supplement with fabric frm the shop. Thanks!!!

Re: Halloween Quilt
I have a great deal of JoAnn fabric and use it for alot of my projects. It should be fine for the wallhanging you described. Have fun with it. I hope you will take a picture of it when you finish.
Happy stitching!!

Welcome, LynnS: Glad to have you with us. This is the finest group of quilters you will ever meet.
Is there a book of Eleanors with this pattern, do you know? I mean the one she was making when you saw her program?

I don't know what books she has, but it's probably in one of them. I'll look for a link and post it. Were you wondering what the pattern looked like? It's not necessarily a holiday pattern but can be done with any color. In the episode she showed a Patriotic quilt, a Christmas quilt, a country quilt and a baby looking quilt, all with the same pattern or a variation. She said it was originally described as the "cracker" pattern back in the 30's (I think it was the 30's...)

Ok I think it's in "Still Stripping After 25 Years". But I'm not sure since I only see the name "Early Firecracker" listed and not apicture of it.
