Brightest and Best
My daughter gave me a load of fqs in bright solids and small patterns, all very tasteful (if brights can ever be tasteful)! I am making the Egg Money quilt with them and with a cream on cream. Do you think I should be using white on white - somehow they are being dulled down.
I did have the idea of using some butterfly fabric as well and making the whole thing into a garden quilt, with paths of deep green to try and bring back the whole bright thing.
Does anyone have any suggestions - it seems that brights are more problem than any other colours I have used!
Love
Sue

Hi Susannon,
I think it is a personal choice. I love using white fabrics to brighten up a quilt. I too am trying to get used to using brights. I know the younger gals like them but it is hard to break old opinions. Actually, I think Egg Money would be interesting in brights, a whole new spin on traditional patterns. Would love to see the top when you finish.

I think using the brights is a great idea. Can you do a practice one with the white one with the creme. I know this sounds like a lot of work, but even if you did a mock block, make yourself a cuppa and look at it a few times during the day and then perhaps you can see which combination you might like best.
Also, the creme color you are using might not be light enough. Let us know what you did.

Sue, go to this post and scroll down till you see Checkers photos of her grandmother's garden block:
http://www.quiltinaday.com/community/to ... topic=2051
She did bright colors.
Also, the grandmothers flower garden is an excellent one to "audition" colors, just don't attach it to the background fabric, just play around with placing it on different fabrics.
One of the quilts in the book is done with a solid red for the background. Really stunning.

I'm crazy for brights. I love to take traditional patterns and do them in brights. That's what I plan to do when I take a class from Sue this fall on the Magic Vine. I love all the jewel colors. I would love to do something with a black background, but I just can't see well enough to do that. May try a dark green instead, but don't want the leaves to disappear. I am so looking forward to that class. Have fun with those brights!!!!

Dear All,
Thank you for those ideas. I really liked the grandmother's flower garden on white with brights and can see that it works much better than on cream. Unfortunately I have already made the turkey tracks, drunkards path, cross, and another two blocks of drunkards path which I have turned around to make a very japanese inspired block - am trying to talk DH into taking photos to send to you. So today I have cut out four of every one of the fabrics to make into the friendship blocks (56 2.5 inch squares) and suddenly I am getting excited with them - it seems that lots of brights together is much better. Must go and sew them all!
Love,
Sue

Grammy65. . .
This is the quilt that was started on my worktable in the pictures of my sewing room.
I was really excited about it at first but didn't get all the fabric together before I started it so now am kind of lost as to how to finish it. Your suggestions would be most welcome! I like the small orange border but after that I'm not sure. The person getting the quilt loves lavendar so would like to put that in and for some reason the black and white called out to me but I'm not sure now. I have a lavendar batik that didn't show in the picture also. Please give me any suggestions.
Susannon. . . .I hear you! This started out to be so promising.

WOW...I love those Hawaiian prints. How large is this quilt supposed to be? What does it measure without any borders. To be truthful...I like the orange first border and then the black....if it is large enough I would stop. The only other suggestion I have would maybe put in a small border of that wonderful blue in the large squares either before or after the orange border. But I like the way the pointy part of the orange hits the orange border. Just enough to tie it in, but not get lost in the border. It is such a bold quilt, I just don't know if I would put any more borders on than you have. I definitely like the orange border going on before the black.
If the person receiving the quilt loves lavender, could you do something with that on the back. If you have any more of the flowered fabric it's always fun to put a strip of that on the back with the backing fabric on either side. Maybe try and find a piece that has mostly lavender in it (the flowered fabric). If you use lavender on the back, maybe you could put a very small (1/2") border of lavender between the orange and black, or maybe do the binding in the same fabric as the back. Now I'm just rambling.
This is just my opinion. Without seeing what other fabrics you have it's kind of hard to tell. You did a beautiful job, and I love the colors. That's my kind of bright!!!
