Has anyone made a New York Beauty?

Post by sewbug » Thu Jun 28, 2007 12:56 pm

I signed up for a class to make a wall hanging of one and we have to bring our own fabric. I've been looking at pictures online and the choosing the right color fabric will be hard for me. I want a lot of contrast and color. Anyone have any ideas? What QIAD fabric would you choose?

Oh, I'm not partial to pink and QIAD has an excellent fabric kit but in pink!

signed up to take class and couldn't get out of bed the day of the class. It really is a beautiful quilt and I needed a challenge. Good luck selecting fabric. Believe my pattern I purchased had many dark fabrics in it.

Good Luck

Sewbug - I think that quilt would be gorgeous in dark jewel tone batiks including some yellow/golds for contrast. One of these days I'm going to make one of those.

I did a workshop with New York Beauty blocks. It took me ALL DAY to make 2 blocks. I had bought batiks for it in contrasting colors, but noticing how small the paper-pieced wedges were after sewing them, I realized I didn't need to have alot of pattern to the fabric. Those were the first two blocks I made and the last two blocks I made....hope you enjoy it....I thought it was more than my patience would endure! Hope you have more endurance than I had, but just in case you aren't sure, remember, you can always go back for more fabric if you like the process!

The pattern from quilt in a day uses fusible, not paper piecing! I believe the pattern is in Quilt Through the Seasons.

While going through all my quilting magazines this week, I came across a paper pieced New York Beauty pattern that I think I will try. It is designed by Pat Sloan. She did it in traditional fabric, but think I will go with batiks. Paper piecing is the only way I would even try this pattern. I really don't want to applique` all that, and I definitely don't want to try piecing with templates. So guess paper piecing is the best way for me. We will see!!!!

The pattern was in McCall's Quilting October 2006.

Grammy65 - good luck. I would also like to make New York Beauty. It's a 'one of these days' thing. I'm anxious to see how yours turns out. Have you done paper piecing before? I have not so it might behoove me to do a simpler pattern first.

Cindyg....I really like the pattern I found. I have done quite a bit of paper piecing. Didn't think I would ever learn. Then I took a class from Billie Lauder at our quilt retreat and finally figured it out. It wasn't that difficult, but I do better with hands on rather than instructions. It's a lot of up and down from the sewing machine to the ironing board to the cutting mat. I finally got it set up so that it was all right next to my sewing machine....but then I wasn't getting any exercise. LOL.

If you haven't done any paper piecing, I think you are right in thinking about doing some practice pieces first.
