Sew on Patches quilts

Post by LR4KSU » Mon Jul 13, 2015 4:47 am

When our kids were little, we bought them sew on patches from all the states, attractions and National Parks that we visited. My original thought was to sew these on denim blocks and make them a quilt. Now I am not so thrilled with that idea. I was thinking of sewing the patches on 6" tan squares and then proceed to make log cabin blocks using colors that were in the patches. I envision these as being very scrapy looking quilts. As usual I am second guessing myself. I am asking for suggestions or ideas for quilts using these patches. I would like them to be simple quilts since I have 3 of them to make. I have about 35-40 patches for each kid. Thanks everyone !

Hi, What a neat collection you must have of patches. Never thought of that when we were traveling all over the country for 8 yrs. NO matter what you make, these will be really nice memory quilts.

Are they iron on or sew on? Just a silly suggestion, but what about a whole cloth quilt and just sew patches all over it. Or you could use very large background blocks so you don't have so many to put together. How old are the kids? Maybe they could help you lay it all out and pin it down to whatever they choose for the background.

What an interesting project. The kids will love it but sounds like a lot of work and you have to make 3 of them. God bless you for doing this for your children. They will appreciate it and hopefully treasure them forever and maybe pass them on to their kids.

God bless you while you work on this. Would love to see a pic when you get them all finished. By the way, where in Kansas do you live? Thought we might be close to you. I am in Kansas City MO. Come join us over in Sew-in. Would love to follow along on your progress on this one.

Hugs dear quilter, Shirley Mae

What comes to mind center on a beige or white neutral color square, and use square in a square fashion. Maybe hand stitch in place, cz machine might not sew through the badge.

I don't have anything to add on the technical side, but I'd just like to say this sounds like an amazing project! Please post photos when finished!

My image on the patch have them centered on squares all around
your quilt in the border setting. If anything like the patches that
was trendy many years ago in MB not sure how you will sew them
onto fabric.. Can you glue or iron in place, before final sewing?

It will be a great memory quilt..
