i was in a swap in another group. was supposed to swap 2 blocks a month for 6 months. i just got 8 completed blocks back at same time as hostess got behind. no big deal...but they smell like cigarette smoke covered up w febreeze freshener...all 8 blocks. im assuming hostess is a smoker as i cant imagine all the blocks received were from smoking homes. think they picked up smell while waiting at hostess home. anyway...wondering if theres any possible way to 'refresh' them. not really wanting to wash them and have them ravel but not really wanting to use them in rwb qov project like they were intended for. marcia

I have no idea how to get the smell out without washing. Could you complete the quilt and then wash

soaked all afternoon in 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 cool water. hung to dry in fresh air and sunlight. worked wonders for the smell...but... blocks were red white and blue blocks for patriotic quilt. someone didnt presoak their reds...so now i have pink instead of white accents in 2 blocks! marcia

You can get the pink out with sythropal. You can find it at some quilt stores, or on-line. It is used in fabric dyeing, and if you use some mixed with water, you can soak the blocks in it and the pink should come out, leaving white.
I've done this before on a quilt top with no problems.

What does this idea sound like, place in plastic bag in freezer for some time, will it rid the smell? If you don't smoke you will notice it much more.. Would lavender spice, or pot pourri help?

Marcia. Leah is right. If you don't smoke you notice the smell much more. maybe you should just take up smoking? LOL
