Hello Everyone, a friend at work knows a guy that operates a storage facility. He said he has lots of drapes, curtains, bedding etc. He said he would sell cheap if I can use any of them for quilting. Would this be advisable for fabrics for quilting? Was thinking
very nice drapery fabric might make a nice log cabin quilt? I don't have money at all to be able to buy fabrics at store so thought this might be one way to get fabrics for quilting?
Any advice on this subject is greatly welcome. thank you so much Rachel

You can use any fabric for quilting, but beware, the quilts will be extremely heavy and more likely not washable. Most drapery fabrics are dry clean only.
But as our pioneer ancestors did, they used what they had.
Just beware,
Jana

I remember my mom having a crazy quilt when I was little and it had bits of all kinds of fabric in it. I recall stroking the velvet pieces when I was about 3 y.o. So I would think you could mix and match the - especially for an art quilt. You might also use them to make throw pillows, cover foot stools, make totes, make-up bags, purses, etc.

oh gosh,
Jerry's grandma worked in a garment factory.. they made polyester suits and night gowns.... the quilt she made is al 10 inch squares and so heavy.... and lucky me, I have it... it is one heavy no batting needed piece of work.. and I love it.
I would ask him what he would do with the fabric if you didn't buy it... if he was going to just throw it away I wouldn't offer him too much...
make sure to post a picture...

I'm with perfect lady, make totes, and try to sell, use the money for good quality cotton for your quilt..
I just viewed a zigzag ruler demos. How tempting.. I'll sleep on it for night, if still uses thought space in my mind by tomorrow, then a sale.

Rachel57 I agree with the other ladies. You can use them to make scrap quilts, but they will be very heavy and probably not washable.

Rachel, sometimes its nice to have practice fabric. If the man would let you look at the items beforehand, it would be an easier decision. If you do get to pick and choose which may not be the case, you would be able to pick useable things. You said some of it is bedding, that could be mattress pads which could be used as batting...and sheets as backing Since you are new to quilting and have no money, it would give you practice that if nothing else would give you practice and confidence and could be used for a picnic quilt at the very least. You may be able to use other things to make craft sale items or to trade with someone else for things that you need. Make sure that you shake all of the things out outside though if you do get any of the items and wash in your tub never know what might be in storage things. Aside from that have you checked with a local senior center? They often have a group that trades things and people often donate to these groups. It may be a source of free things--fabric and patterns. Check your local library also as they frequently have groups of crafters that meet and get local donations.
Also, check local agency on aging as they have many programs that help low income people including pet supplies you do not have to be on welfare or meet special requirements. We helped a couple for years through this program when we were younger and now see many friends who go there for help. Also, your local churches often provide things that you may need--wood included if you volunteer.
I know that you are pretty much in need of a lot of things, so look into these things and We will all be praying for you here.

Drapery fabrics will make lovely clothes for you and children..
Say: vests, jackets,
pillowcases, tablecloths, bags, totes, wallets, paperback covers,
your own drapes.. pencil cases for local schools thinking donation system and on fundraising for the needy.. See where I'm going?
Not telling just sharing my ideas..

How about, skirts for grandkids, or denim style skirt for you...how about shorts? Not something we wear much around here due to the climate..
