Hello, I am recently disabled and now have time I always wanted to quilt. To me,there is nothing more special then receiving one as a gift or just snuggling up in one. I would love some help with the terminology.
what are: quarters
fat quarters
layer cakes
jelly rolls
There are others not listed but I cannot order to start anything to start a project. I really want to make some holiday things. quilts, runners and bags are my goal. Thanks for your help.

Hi nanny

A quarter yard is 9 x 42
a fat quarter is 18 x 22
Layer cakes are 10 inch squares
Jelly rolls are 2-1/2x 42

They are called precuts.....fabric is cut for you also Charms are 5 inch squares (I an fond of) and they now sell 2 1/2 in squares but I am not sure of the name might be called crackers.

Welcome to the forum.....Hope your disability doesn't keep you from sewing and quilting. We meet in the "Sew In" section each day and gab about our lives in general...it is a good place to get to know everyone. Come bring your coffee over there some morning and say hi. I have been a member since 2008 and love all these gals like my family....i am sure you will too.

The Web is loaded with free patterns and there are some here,,,also if you get a pattern znd are stumped....some of the smarted quilters reside here, AND,,,,Quilt in a Day has a bazillion videos to help you make the perfect project.

Nanny.. welcome to the forum.. it's a great place to form friendships...

Judi listed the sizes of the different cuts of fabrics and if you google free quilt patterns you will find more projects than you can do in a life time...

Welcome, Nanny! I see you've had most of your questions answered so I'll just say come on in! Check out all the parts of this forum. we chatter each morning in Sew-in. About life in general but also about our quilting. CHIT-CHAT has specific subjects. There's PHOTOS, SWAPS (some holiday things going on there!) and other discussion/question/answer areas as well as the one at the top which allows us to post photos of quilts and projects we've done from Eleanor's books. chick it all out!

Hi I just signed up here last night and already got a nice respond to my problem. I am original from Germany. My husband was stationed there but they send him to ft bliss Texas where we lived until feb13. My husband is now retired and is trying to help me with my Quilting projects. I made a lot of Christmas decoration and quilts last year and sold most of it on a Christmas bazar at ft bliss. So we are going to make some more for this year. I am so impressed about the quilt stores here and with all the projects I find. I love quilting and I love the feeling you get when you finished a projects. I hope to find good friends here and I am looking forward to the conversations. Have a great weekend
