Shirting fabrics

Post by FavoriteGrandma » Thu May 17, 2012 7:34 am

I have seen a few patterns lately that call for shirting fabrics. Are they different than cotton? Just curious if anyone knows!
Thanks, Becky

I am not too sure on this one - but I think that they are small prints - like you would find on a man's shirt - they are cottons - just a finer weave as well.

I recently saw some shirting fabric in a Keepsake Quilting Mag. I never heard of it before. Some men's shirts would make nice quilt blocks with their "cool" designs and bright colors. Back in pioneer days, all clothes were cut up into quilt blocks etc when they had too many holes or became outgrown. What are you making with it?

Hugs, Shirley Mae ps Happy quilting and God bless as you do.

Thanks ladies. I just had not heard of it, and wondered if it was something special. I am not making anything in particular, Shirley Mae, just read the term a few times in some quilting magazines. Actually must have liked the patterns, or I probably would have missed the term.
Appreciate the feed back! Have a great day.

Shirting fabrics are usually 1800 reproductons. They are white with small prints on them. Most prints are black or red that I have seen.

There are also fabrics called shirtings that are plaid and plain that you would make a man's shirt out of.
